Interviu: White Lies

Muzica voastra a fost descrisa in numeroase feluri: dark, pesimista, emo, cathedral pop etc.

T
he Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Cine e responsabil pentru fiecare in parte?

White Lies White Lies

Varianta in limba engleza/ The English version

How did White Lies meet and start playing? Did you all have similar tastes in music or did it take some talking to come to terms?

We started playing together at the age of 14. This means we have had over 6 years to learn how each other work musically and also for our tastes and preferences in music and sound mature and then start all over again. We started playing through boredom and because we liked the idea of being in a band. It  seemed like a cool thing to do. But as we got deeper into it, we began to treat music very seriously and almost as some kind of extension of our personalities. To this day we all have a great respect for each others music tastes (which are very diverse) even if we don't agree with them all the time.

Your music has been called many things: dark, pessimistic, emo, cathedral pop etc. How would you describe it?

Asking me that is like asking me to describe myself. We really are what we are...it's such a strange thing to try and sum up your creative fruits in a couple of words. Today...let's go with...Funeral After-Party Anthems.

What are your biggest influences, without which one could say White Lies would have been something totally different?

The Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Your lyrics are dark, but the instrumental part is very uplifting and full of energy, a really strange and cool combination. Where do these two different parts come from? Who's responsible for each of them?

I write the lyrics (Charles Cave) and we all work on the music together. I think the combination of the two elements works very well together. It creates a kind of emotional limbo. People leave the shows or finish the album feeling moved (hopefully) in some way, but neither positively or negatively. The lyrics come very naturally to me but also very rarely. I don't write all the time. I wait until I really have to...for therapy.

Have you seen the line-up for this year's B'estFest? What do you think of it? Are there any bands that you enjoy or that you've played with before?

I have glanced over the line-up and wish I could stay to watch Moby.

How do you feel about visiting Bucharest? Will you take some time to visit around? Do you usually visit the places where you perform?

I hope we get the chance. I love to explore as much as possible. Jack and myself are very keen photographers and like to do that everywhere we go.

What can we expect from your gig at B'estFest? And what are you expecting from the audience?

I think it is going to be a magical night for everyone. We can't wait to play our songs for the audience and I hope there is some anticipation for us to arrive too.

Will you be wearing black, as you usually do in your performances?

We don't always wear black anymore. We do what we feel comfortable. We will wait and see...
