Interviu: Mick Moss (Antimatter)

Muzica rostita ma duce in cele mai intense puncte ale emotiei - desigur, asta in cazul in care reusesc sa-mi fac treaba bine.

Acest filon rock a existat mereu in mine, intamplarea face sa fie exploatat mai mult in ultimul album.

Days away from the meeting with Antimatter hosted in Bucharest by Becker Brau Music Club, I had the chance to talk about the band and its history with Mick Moss, the "father" of this musical project.

It seems there is a strong connection between you and Anathema. You worked with both Duncan Patterson and Danny Cavanagh. Where does this chemistry come from?

Myself, Duncan and Danny all have a strong respect for each other abilities, and also we're good friends, which is usually a good start.

In Antimatter, you performed on vocals, acoustic/electric guitars, organ, electric piano. Which side would be your favorite?

Probably vocals, as that's where the heart of the song is. Singing is where I get to my higher place, so it's very emotionally rewarding for me to do it, if I'm doing it right of course.

"Leaving Eden" announced a change of direction compared to previous Antimatter discs, and the band switched musical directions all along its evolution. What exactly triggered the change? How can you tell when the choice is good or bad?

The last album as a whole was rockier. But this wasn't so much of a change for me personally, as if you listen to my tracks from the first album, specifically 'The Last Laugh' and 'Saviour', they're both very rock orientated tracks. The same goes for the second album, with passages from 'In Stone' and 'The Art Of A Soft Landing' being very heavy indeed. That rock vein has always been there in me, it's just that I explored it more with the last album.

The tour in november will bring you back-to-back with Duncan Patterson. Do you think there's a chance for the band to be reunited? Is
there a chance to hear new Antimatter material soon?

I don't think Duncan would like to work with me as Antimatter again, as he has tasted the freedom of Ion, where he has complete control over what goes on. It's not impossible that we would record together again at some point, as we're both acquainted and we both work within the music industry, two factors that seem to bring people together when recording is concerned. As far as new music from myself goes, I do have new material but I am talking it slowly over the next year. Probably 2010 will be the next album.

Anathema has a tradition of performing some cover versions of famous bands like, say, Pink Floyd or The Beatles. Is this an option for the shows of the tour that will include Bucharest?

Duncan and myself have also covered Pink Floyd and The Beatles in the past, as they're both pretty important bands in our musical past. Actually, I was talking to Duncan just yesterday about adding a Beatles track to the setlist, so, yeah, we may see some.
