Varianta originala in engleza a interviului se gaseste mai jos (for the English version, see below)

:

Cine e Madonna, in afara de Madonna?

Cum a inceput calatoria voastra?

Sonoritatea noastra s-a dezvoltat de-a lungul a 12 ani in care am incercat sa fim diferiti, dar in acelasi timp sa cream muzica accesibila si placuta oricui.

Avem foarte multe sample-uri acustice.
Folosim sample-uri electronice doar daca au o motivatie puternica.
Ritm de swing.
Fara voci plangarete.

Aveti un stil vestimentar foarte original. Cum ati ajuns la el?

Muzica noastra e foarte feminina, asa ca a venit natural. Primele fotografii in rochii le-am facut in 1999 si de-atunci nu ne-am mai putut opri.

Poti sa calatoresti in timp si spatiu. Ce loc si vreme ai alege?

Berlin in anii 1920.

("Come to me" a fost cel mai greu).

In comparatie cu "Come to me", care ne-a luat aproape 2 ani...

Multumesc, ne vedem la Bucuresti!

(ENGLISH VERSION)

Who is Koop, besides Oscar and Magnus?

Who is Madonna, besides Madonna?  We have made music together under the name of Koop for more than 12 years now, and Koop has never been, and will never be, anything else than me and Magnus. We sometimes bring different guest singers and live musicians to the studio but they have no influence over the musical directions or the final results. Koop is something strictly between our minds.

In the blue ocean of jazz, where do Koop Islands lay?

Where popular music meets hardcore swing.

How did such an exotic tropical sound emerge from a Northern European country? How did you start your pleasure cruise?

It was very far from a pleasure cruise. “Koop Islands” was our hardest album to make and it was surrounded with personal problems and some tragedys. If you regard “Koop Islands” as a pleasure cruise you must listen more to the lyrics, and discover the clouds behind the sunshine melodies.

Only 3 albums in over 10 years' time? How come? Any additional projects going on?

We would never have additional projects. Koop is what we do, and we are a band, not producers. Our musical career begins and ends with Koop. Our albums are our babies and we spend a lot of time and effort behind them. That’s why they take such long time to make. Our music is also based on samples, witch is a very time consuming way to create songs like these.

It has always felt like every album is gonna be our last, wich makes us even more careful.

Where do you get your inspiration? Do you compose per se or do you thrive on samples and beats fused together? And especially, what makes that special and unmistakable Koop sound?

We don’t listen so much to other music. We get inspired by small samples from strange vinyl records we find in cheap bargain stores. And we inspire each other. We are very different so together we are very strong as long as we don’t fight to much. Our sound has developed thorugh 12 years of  wanting to be different, but still aiming to make music that could be enjoyed by everyone. The start of a song could be anything. A drum sample, a melody or a lyrical line. Koop is an emotion that was very clear to us already when we started, and every song is an attempt to explain that emotion. But we have some musical rules as well. Here are some of them:

Simple melodies.
Simple lyrics.
Simple harmonies.
Every part of a song that is not fully motivated for the song should go away.
Rhythm is there to support the song and should never take over.
No electric guitars or basses.
A lot of aucoustic samples.
Electronic samples should be used only if they are extremely motivated.
Swing rhythm.
No wailing vocals.

That's a fancy dress code you've got. How did you settle for that?

Koop music is very feminine so it felt natural. We took the first pictures with dresses in 1999 and since then it’s been impossible to stop.

Travel in time& space: pick a place and a period.

Berlin 1920’s. Jazz was dance music and women cut their hair and started to wear trousers.

If you could bring back one musician (composer/singer/performer) from the past, to play with, who would it be?

We don’t want to work with famous legends. It takes away the focus from the songs, and the emotion we want to deliver. We prefer friends and not so famous Scandinavian singers.

koop press pics

How many people will you bring on stage in Bucharest and especially whose voices will we hear?

We will bring 4 live musicians and two singers. Hilde Louise Asbjornsen and Mikael Sundin.

Got plans for a new album any time soon?

Magnus and I have just rented a space outside Stockholm where we meet everyday. Hopefully this will turn out to be our 4th album. It might take a long time and we don’t want to release anything just to release it. We are very satisfied with the three albums so far, and we don’t want to destroy or outwater what they represent. So if there’s going to be another album it’s not only have to be very good,  we also have to find a new angle to express that Koop emotion.

One last question, with quite a personal twist, the genuine awe of all the people I know who have been listening to you:
How the hell did you come up with such a hauntingly beautiful Koop Island Blues?

Thank you very much! “Koop Island Blues” is very special to us since it was the easiest and fastest song to make on the album (“Come to me” was the hardest).

It was when the album started to take shape and we could see the Island theme coming.

I had just met Ane Brun at a friends bar in Stockholm and we played some songs together on a piano. I felt she was the one to sing this song, and called her up. We showed her the lyrics and the melody and she did the vocals in one take. This song was done in less than a week. Compare with “Come to me”, that took almost 2 years...

Thank you and see you in Bucharest!
