Daca-l asculti azi, suna de-a dreptul fantastic.

Noi incercam mereu lucruri noi, incercam sa aducem ceva nou.

K7 ne-a acordat aceeasi libertate deci am putut sa lucram in aceleasi conditii.

Abia asteptam.

English interview

So Herbaliser... you've been in the business for quite a while. How did you get started and what changes have you gone through?

We've had some really good times. We were lucky. You always hear the expression "be in the right place at the right time". That's true for us. At the beginning we weren't very well known but in a year or two it exploded. It was really exciting going to all these new countries, doing live things. At one time Cold Cut took Ollie djing with them and I was at home getting pissed off because I wanted to travel the around the world. That's when I decided to get together with my old funk band and do the Herbaliser live.

Now we are a live band, but that's because we brought over more and more live musicians. Working with samples, that's where it all started.

For your first record that you released, did you have people that really believed in you?

When our first record came out, nobody knew us really. The album brought us a lot of mainstream attention. It was reviewed by the Melody Maker, Enemy, magazines which were very influential. What we've noticed about the press, the english press but maybe it's the same all over the world. When you're a new band, you're always going to get press. But if it's your second record, you really have to do good, really good to get the same amount of press you got on your first record.

So we made our second record Blow your headphones which if you go online on different forums and such, which we do, there are people there saying it's the best record we ever made. If you listen to it now it sounds fantastic, it sounds like it could've been made yesterday. I'm very proud of that album.

We keep pushing ourselves, pushing boundaries. We wanted to work with a singer so in the last studio album we put out we worked with a singer. It's still Herbaliser I think. We still think of hip hop as our main source of inspiration, but we were doing funk songs.

What was it like changing labels after working with Ninja Tune for so long?

We had 100% creative freedom with Ninja Tune. But we were just feeling a little bit stale, it was time for a change. K7 gave us the same amount of freedom I think with NinjaTune. they make a style of music today that is a lot different from Herbaliser, very comercial, a lot of noise. The last intervewer asked me: "What can we expect from the Herbaliser". We're like a traditional band. Ollie and I, we both like the sounds of live instruments and heavily processed sounds aren't really for us. I'm not saying it's bad, people like what they like.

Since you worked on some soundtracks in the past, what is it about soundtracks that make them so important for a movie or a game?

Soundtrack music has had a major influence on us. When we started making music we hardly had any vocalists so we had a lot of experience with instrumental music. They say if you watch a horror movie with the sound off it's just not that intimidating. We had music in comercials on TV where there's nothing being said, there's only music. Instrumental music can tell an entire story.

You're coming to Romania to a music festival and UK has a great tradition of events like that. Can you talk to us about some of your favourite british music festivals?

Nowadays I don't think Glastonbury is as good today as it once was. When I was 19 I went to Glastonbury, did a whole lot of drugs and can't remember anything. I didn't see any bands and I had a brilliant time. For me it's not necessarily about the bands, it's about the people. When I went there in '89, all my peeps in England were there. Now it's changed.  Now it's 100% corporate and a family event. And none of my friends go there anymore and I'm to old.

Back then you went to Glastonbury and you could hang out on the field, were people were playing music by the fire, there were acrobats, everybody was enjoying themselves and there was nothing official about it.

What are some of your favourite Jazz clubs in London?

Fabric is a good club. It's kinda clean, like a super club, but it's a good alternative to the regular house music being played in dance clubs. The Jazz Cafe used to be a really good place but it's been taken over by somebody else now and they don't bring bands that are very good. 5 years ago you could go to the Jazz Cafe and see some huge Jazz singers from America playing in a small intimate room to 300 people or so, no more. There is also 606, a good oldschool club.

Well thank you so much for your time and we look forward to seeing you in september.

Thanks a lot. We can't wait. It's going to be excellent.
