Interviu in engleza mai jos / For the English version, see below

Am putea spune -metaforic vorbind- ca sunteti stelele intunecate (
Dark Stars) ale taramului darkwave. Care v-au fost Generatoarele tot timpul asta?

Prea multa ambitie, hehe!

Vremea experimentelor este "over and done"?

Depinde.

Versatilitatea pasiunilor care iti permit sa ataci o gama larga de stiluri, in functie de unde auzi the "Bells of another land"?

(Have you ever been to heaven? I don't talk about the sky.)

Apoi vom vedea... Poate primavara viitoare? Da, ar fi o idee buna!

Original interview in English (with Ernst Horn from Deine Lakaien):

One could metaphorically say that you are the "Dark Stars" of the darkwave musical realm. What were your "Generators" all this time?

Too much ambition, hehe! No, I’m not sure, because such a „steady“ career is quite unusual. Maybe, because we are always curious, maybe also because Alexander and I are so different and we lead different lifes.

Alexander lives in Berlin and I stay in Munich, so when we meet after a long break, it’s always a bit of a new beginning.

As music and lyrics composers, nolens volens you send messages to your listeners and fans. What is that message? Do you see music as a "Mindmachine"?

That’s a difficult question. Is melancholy a message? At least, aiming for quality is a message in a commercialised music-scene. But, apart from the typical melancholic "Lakaien-song“ we are often trying to touch philosophical themes, such as our various Reincarnation songs or political lyrics, like  Mirror men or Hands white.

Both of you managed for so long to keep a very low profile as regards your personal lives and Alexander said once that on stage he's more like an actor. Is disguise and the need to build artistic personnas necessary?

Well, singers become too often identified with their songs and their appearance on stage. So, it’s a good idea to separate your normal life from your Pop-Stardom. For me as the keyboardist, this is a more simple story and I regard myself as a working artist and I don’t have any problem, talking about my private life.

deine lakaien

Between the first and last of your albums, and between the time you were looking for "singer willing to experiment" and the recent philharmonic experience, would you say that the electronic avantgarde era turned more into neoclassical? Is the experimental time "over and done"?

Ah no, I think, the concerts with the orchestra were a real new experience, definetely more „avantgarde“ than our last albums.

The idea was, to arrange our songs without limitations, for electronics, orchestra and band in any combination, maybe neoclassical in one song, maybe atonal in another one. Another question might be, which kind of importance the electronic part in the music of Deine Lakaien will fulfill. We’ll see....

Both of you have other musical projects and I am referring now to your Helium Vola, is it hard to make (while composing or playing) the switch between the medieval song and electronic avantgarde?

No, absolutely not! The medieval music is a great inspiration and fits very well into electronic sounds, due to the modal harmonies with the „open fifth“.

I love the feel of the medieval poetry and music, but I regard myself as a music-writer, composing the vocal parts of Helium Vola and as a contemporary electronic-music producer in my studio.

Was it difficult to reinvent more than 20 songs for symphonic execution (for "20 years..." album) or -thanks to your musical background- did it come natural?

At the beginning, I was not sure if I can manage all that. The times when I worked as a conductor were too far behind and I have no high-school degree in composition or instrumentating for orchestra. But quite soon I noticed, that many things were still in memory: the experience, how this and that will sound in my inner ears and in my inner eyes I saw the musicians at work, the fingers on the violin and so on...

The effort was now, to reach an individual style for each song, equivalent to its meaning. I must say, that especially this part of my work was great fun! But nobody of us expectet that the whole show would work so well. That was a big surprise.

deine lakaien

Would you say that there is an apparent recurrent contemporary attitude vs music, namely of finding inspiration in centuries past, civilizations long gone or far away cultures? Is the modern musician stepping inside the treasure chest again to recycle and reinvent, entering the experimental realm?

It depends. In the classic music the evolution was quite straight-forward, from romantic to atonal to serial to noise....and now many composers are adding historical elements in order to use it as part of their „collage-technique“. Sometimes pop music has a similar approach, but always tries to communicate this in an easy consumable manner and very often, I must say that, Pop music is simply stealing from all countries and all times in order to get money out of that.

Could that be another quality of the modern musician? This versatility of passions that allows one to tackle a wide range of styles, depending on where he hears the "Bells of another land"?

No, „bells of another land“ means our longing for everything that is out of reach for us. Music styles are available for everyone today as any information is available through the internet. But do you have the skills of Mozart or of an Indian Sitar-player by using samples of their music? No. So, better develop your own style, there is plenty to discover by practising and digging deep at few places.

Have you ever been to heaven? I don't talk about the sky.

Haha, yes, but just like everyone. Finishing a piece of music can sometimes make me euphoric-at least until the next morning, when I listen to it again with sober ears. Sometimes on stage, yes, and of course moments in my private life, same as in yours.

No, let me rephrase that :) - the best concert - where was it? (Considering several things: public, venue, city, et. al)

The best moments appeared, when we were unsecure about succeeding...for instance our first concert with orchestra in Frankfurt. everything worked perfect, an overwhelming experience. Or at a hardrock festival in Bremen: we stood on stage- after „Such a surge“ and before „Biohazard“, performing our melancholic art- and the audience liked it. And I remember another great moment at a small venue with Sabine Lutzenberger from Helium Vola. Our music consisted of a wild mixture of medieval chants and documentaries, statements of American politicians before the Irak-war.

When can we hope for a new Deine Lakaien album?

At the moment, Alexander is still busy with“ Veljanov“, his solo-project and the new Helium Vola album will be out on 27th of march.

And then we must see...Maybe next spring? Yes, that might be good idea!
